Acolytes assist the priest in the worship service in many ways.  Acolytes may carry candles (torch-bearer), the cross (crucifer), Gospel (Gospel-bearer), or assist the priest at the altar (server).   The torch-bearer represents the light of Christ and accompanies the crucifer in the procession. The Gospel-bearer carries the Gospel book in the procession.  The crucifer leads the procession, carrying the cross representing Jesus’ presence in our worship. The server helps the priest to act out Jesus’ own instructions to his disciples, to serve one another and break bread together in his memory.  In the early days of the Christian church, serving as an Acolyte was one of the steps towards become a pastor.  For more information, contact Diana Smelt at or call 757/269-8723.
