Backpack Ministry

Grace Church has a weekly commitment during the school year to help feed selected youth living in poverty from Yorktown Middle School.  Despite Social Services and programs like food stamps, there are many local families who do not have adequate resources to provide basic food needs for their children.  During the school year children that who have been found to meet “poverty eligibility” standards receive free breakfast and lunch.  When school is not in session (to include weekends) those resources are not available.  The Backpack Ministry strives to remedy that deficit in some small way.  The staff at the middle school identifies 8-10 families who are in particular need.  Every Friday a backpack filled with prepackaged foods is sent home with the students.  On Monday the backpacks are returned to the school and re-circulated back to the resource providers (Grace Church parishioners) for the following week.  Currently we have over 35 parishioners who donate food items or money to this worthy cause.
