Director of Children and Youth Ministries
Grace Episcopal Church, Yorktown, VA
Job Description

The Director of Children and Youth Ministries (DCYM) leads a vibrant ministry with and for the children and youth of Grace Church, equipping them to become fully functioning members in mission and ministry both within the church and in their daily lives.  Responsibilities include inspiring youth to a life of faith, nurturing a community of mutual support, developing and overseeing Christian Formation programs, recruiting and training volunteers, and collaborating with clergy and staff.

Building relationships is clearly foremost to accomplishing this job.  The DCYM needs to know and care for our children and young people, and know the families from which they come.  Warm relationships with parents and other parishioners foster a willing corps of volunteers who care about our children’s Christian development.  The DCYM exercises strong planning and clear communication with clergy, staff, and vestry to build support for programs.  The DCYM builds relationships in the wider community to create opportunities for joint education and outreach programs.

The DCYM is present on Sunday mornings and at other times when children, youth, and families are available.  The DCYM works with the Christian Formation Vestry Commission to develop an annual calendar of events, including Sunday School and special family and parish-wide events.

In addition, the DCYM, working with a Christian Formation team, reviews and implements curriculum for all ages, nursery through senior high school.  The DCYM recruits, trains, and schedules teaching volunteers, and provides them with ongoing support.  The DCYM oversees the church nursery and its paid staff and volunteers.

The DCYM oversees the Episcopal Youth Community (EYC) for middle and high school students and recruits and supports adult leaders.  The DCYM supports and participates in EYC activities, as appropriate, helping to build enthusiasm among our youth for service, leadership, and fellowship in church and community and at diocesan and national levels.

The DCYM collaborates with the Vestry Outreach Commission to provide opportunities for children, youth, and their families to participate in community outreach events and service missions to spread the love of God in the wider community.

The DCYM serves on the board of directors of the Grace Church Day School and takes an active role in the Day School Chapel program.

The DCYM attends staff meetings and Christian Formation commission meetings, develops and manages an annual budget, fulfills all training requirements including Safe Church, CPR, and First Aid, coordinates fundraisers to support youth ministry, and uses social media to communicate with and engage youth and their families.

We seek an energetic, open-hearted individual to teach and inspire the children and youth of Grace Church and to help these young people grow in their faith in Jesus Christ.  The DCYM blends creativity, organizational ability, and enthusiasm to lead children, youth, their parents, and adult volunteers into full, committed participation in the Body of Christ. The DCYM leads by example, models a curiosity and desire to learn, and practices inclusivity, tolerance, and respect for the dignity and worth of every human being.

An ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree, at least 2-3 years experience working with children/youth, and experience in the Episcopal Church tradition or a willingness to learn and teach the tradition. The candidate must have a valid driver’s license.  A background check is required.  This job is open until filled.
