(This schedule will run through July and August) Education for Ministry (EfM) Education for ministry is a formal program of theological education administered by the School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Known informally as EfM, this program is for lay people in small (6 to 12) groups and is led by trained mentors who act as facilitators. Each facilitator attends continuing education classes every 18 months. EfM has a four-year curriculum; each “year” lasts nine months with the seminar groups meeting once a week for a three-hour period. In succeeding years, the groups study the Old Testament, the New Testament, Church History, and Ethics and Theology. An important component of each session is a process called “theological reflection” where participants learn to think theologically and forge their ministries as mature Christians. This is a self-study course; while no written work is required, there are weekly reading assignments, and discussions. Tuition assistance is available.
Grace began offering this study in 1993, under the guidance of Elsa Bakkum, who formed and mentored two groups. Since then, under the Grace EfM program, fifty participants have completed all four years, enrolling one year at a time; and Grace has four trained mentors.
If you are interested in learning more about EfM, please contact Sandy Swift at the Church Office (898-3261), John Hoppe (804-843-4573), or speak with the Rector or Assistant Rector. A new class will be forming in September and will meet on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 p.m. in the parlor of the Parish House.
